Brain-Boosting Warm-Ups may sharpen balance in back pain sufferers
NCT ID NCT07761247
First seen Aug 12, 2026 · Last updated Aug 13, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether combining cognitive tasks with neuromuscular warm-up exercises—like balancing while counting backward or squatting while generating words—can improve balance and joint position sense in people with chronic nonspecific low back pain. Participants are randomly assigned to either dual-task warm-ups or standard warm-ups, with both groups also receiving conventional physiotherapy. Balance, proprioception, muscle properties, and flexibility are measured before and after a single session to see if the added mental challenge provides extra immediate benefits.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Dual-task neuromuscular warm-up exercises (neuromuscular warm-up combined with cognitive tasks)
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this approach could offer a simple, drug-free way to enhance balance and body awareness in people with chronic low back pain, potentially improving daily function.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial (40 participants) measuring immediate effects only, so any benefits may be short-lived or not generalizable. The added cognitive tasks could also increase difficulty or fatigue.
