New acid blocker may beat standard treatment for stomach bug

NCT ID NCT07537634

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a newer acid-reducing drug (vonoprazan) works better than a standard one (esomeprazole) for clearing H. pylori, a bacteria that can cause stomach ulcers and indigestion. About 80 adults with H. pylori will take one of the two drug combinations for 14 days. Four weeks later, a stool test will check if the infection is gone.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
vonoprazan or esomeprazole, each combined with amoxicillin and levofloxacin
What this could lead to
If vonoprazan works better, it could offer a more effective option for clearing H. pylori infections, reducing the risk of ulcers and stomach issues.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase 4 trial with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Both regimens include antibiotics, which can cause side effects like diarrhea or allergic reactions.
