Vitamin d study aims to protect kidneys in children

NCT ID NCT02238418

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether the usual vitamin D doses given to children with chronic kidney disease, kidney transplants, or nephrotic syndrome are enough to raise their vitamin D levels to a healthy range. Forty-three children received vitamin D vials based on their weight and starting levels. Researchers also checked if the vitamin D caused too much calcium in the urine, which can be a safety concern. The goal is to improve care for these children.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Vitamin D (cholecalciferol) vials

What this could lead to

If successful, this could confirm that current vitamin D dosing works for children with kidney problems, helping prevent bone disease and other complications.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-center study with only 43 children, so results may not apply to all. It also only looks at short-term effects, not long-term benefits or risks.
