Virtual reality offers new hope for comfort in final months

NCT ID NCT07545928

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether an interactive virtual reality (VR) program can help reduce pain, anxiety, and fatigue in 20 hospitalized palliative care patients. Participants use a VR headset with sensors to interact with a calming natural environment for 10 minutes daily over 14 days. The main goal is to see if the approach is feasible and well-tolerated, not yet to prove it works.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Interactive virtual reality program (ZenctuaryVR+) delivered via head-mounted display with biosensors

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a non-drug way to help palliative care patients manage pain, anxiety, and fatigue, improving their quality of life.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study (20 people) with no control group, so results may not apply broadly. The VR device may cause discomfort or not be tolerated by all patients.
