Aging clock test: tirzepatide trial targets biological age
NCT ID NCT07220473
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study tests whether tirzepatide (Zepbound), a drug already used for weight loss, can slow biological aging in adults aged 55 to 70. Ninety participants with a BMI of 27 or higher will be randomly assigned to receive the drug weekly for 24 weeks or no drug, followed by 12 weeks off treatment. The main focus is on changes in DNA-based aging markers, not weight loss.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Tirzepatide (Zepbound), a weekly injection for weight loss
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a way to slow biological aging and improve health in older adults using an existing weight-loss drug.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase pilot study (90 people) with no placebo control—just a no-drug group. The results may not apply to everyone, and the drug's long-term effects on aging are unknown.
