Can teen peers help prevent suicide? new study tests online support
NCT ID NCT07170657
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests an online recovery program for teens aged 15-18 who have been discharged from a psychiatric hospital after suicidal thoughts, attempts, depression, or anxiety. The program pairs them with trained peer support specialists and teen peers for one-on-one and group meetings over 8 weeks. Researchers will compare their progress to teens receiving standard care to see if the program reduces suicidal thoughts, depression, and re-hospitalization.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
peer support services and online recovery education program
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a new, scalable way to support teens after a mental health crisis and reduce the risk of future hospitalizations.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to all teens. The intervention is behavioral and may not work for everyone.
