Summer camp vouchers tested as obesity treatment for poor children

NCT ID NCT07464015

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether giving free summer day camp vouchers to low-income children with overweight or obesity can help them manage their weight. Eighty children aged 5-11 who are on Medicaid will be randomly assigned to either receive a voucher for an 8-week summer day camp or continue with standard care. Researchers will measure changes in weight, physical activity, sleep, and diet to see if the program is feasible and effective.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Summer day camp attendance
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a low-cost, scalable way to help children from low-income families manage their weight during summer break.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study (80 children) testing feasibility, not a large trial. Results may not apply to all children or settings, and weight changes may be modest.
