Hair may hold clues to metabolic health after Weight-Loss surgery

NCT ID NCT07368842

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at how severe obesity and weight-loss surgery change natural chemicals in scalp hair. Researchers will track 60 adults—some with severe obesity scheduled for bariatric surgery and some healthy-weight controls—to see if hair chemistry can signal poor metabolic health. They will also measure how common hair thinning and muscle loss are in the first six months after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple hair test to detect metabolic health problems in people with severe obesity.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early observational study (60 people) that only looks at chemical changes—it does not test any treatment. Results may not apply to everyone.
