Which sedative is safer for elderly surgery patients? new trial investigates
NCT ID NCT07569614
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compared two sedative drugs—remimazolam and dexmedetomidine—to see which one better prevents postoperative delirium (sudden confusion) in patients aged 60 and older after thoracoscopic surgery. A total of 105 participants were randomly assigned to receive one of the two drugs or a placebo. The goal was to find a safer anesthesia option for older adults, who are at higher risk for delirium and related complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Remimazolam tosylate and dexmedetomidine
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a safer sedation option for elderly patients that lowers the risk of postoperative delirium.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with 105 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. Both drugs have known side effects like low blood pressure or slow heart rate.
