Glow-in-the-Dark dye could spare breast cancer patients unnecessary surgery
NCT ID NCT07154563
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests a special dye that makes cancer cells glow when applied to lymph nodes removed during breast cancer surgery. The goal is to help surgeons instantly tell if a sentinel lymph node contains cancer, so they only remove the nodes that are truly affected. The trial will enroll 60 adults with breast cancer and compare the dye's results with standard lab tests.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
NIR-II fluorescent probe (ICG-CK)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give surgeons a real-time tool to tell cancerous from healthy lymph nodes during surgery, potentially reducing side effects like arm swelling.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage, small trial (60 people) testing a new imaging method. The dye may not reliably distinguish all cancer types, and false positives or negatives are possible.
