New rehab pathway aims to get back-pain patients back to work sooner
NCT ID NCT07313566
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This trial tests a structured rehabilitation pathway for people having lumbar surgery for radicular pain (nerve-related back and leg pain). The pathway includes pre-surgery exercise, early movement after surgery, and active guidance to return to work. 480 participants across multiple hospitals will be randomly assigned to either this new rehab plan or usual care. The main goal is to see if the pathway reduces the time it takes to return to work.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- structured rehabilitation pathway (prehabilitation, perioperative and postoperative rehab, case management, early return-to-work guidance)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a proven rehab plan that helps people get back to work sooner after back surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively early-stage trial (cluster randomized) and the effect may vary across hospitals. The intervention is complex and may be hard to implement consistently.
