Could a gentle electric field heal the heart? new study tests Pulsed-Field ablation for persistent AF
NCT ID NCT07675395
First seen Jun 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether pulsed-field ablation (PFA), a non-thermal technique that uses electric pulses to target faulty heart tissue, can reverse structural changes in the heart caused by persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). Researchers will enroll 30 people with persistent AF and use the FARAPULSE system to isolate the pulmonary veins and modify additional heart tissue. They will measure changes in heart size, function, and scarring using echocardiograms, MRI, and invasive pressure readings before and after the procedure, and track whether participants stay free of AF for up to a year.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Pulsed-field ablation using the FARAPULSE system (FARAWAVE catheter)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that pulsed-field ablation not only treats atrial fibrillation but also helps reverse structural damage to the heart, potentially improving long-term outcomes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The procedure carries risks like bleeding, heart damage, or recurrence of abnormal heart rhythms.
