New probe aims to predict heartburn risk after stomach-shrinking surgery

NCT ID NCT04411823

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether a device called EndoFLIP can predict who will develop acid reflux after sleeve gastrectomy, a common weight-loss surgery. Researchers will measure the flexibility and function of the valve between the stomach and esophagus in 200 adults before surgery. The goal is to identify risk factors for new or worsening reflux, which could help doctors tailor surgical approaches or follow-up care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors predict which patients are likely to develop acid reflux after sleeve gastrectomy, allowing for better surgical planning or preventive measures.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The device's predictions may not be accurate for all patients, and the results may not change outcomes directly.
