Stanford launches study to predict brain fog after surgery in seniors
NCT ID NCT03839784
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
Researchers at Stanford are creating a database to better understand why some older adults experience memory or thinking problems after surgery with anesthesia. They will collect information from 250 patients aged 65 and older, including blood samples, brain wave recordings, and thinking tests before and up to a year after surgery. The goal is to build a model that can predict who might have these problems, so doctors can personalize anesthesia care in the future.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a tool that predicts which older patients are at risk for memory or thinking problems after surgery with anesthesia.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage data-gathering study, not a treatment trial. It may not produce a usable prediction model, and results may not apply to all older patients.
