Wrist surgery showdown: to remove or not remove a small bone?
NCT ID NCT04580225
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two types of wrist fusion surgery for people with post-traumatic wrist arthritis. One surgery fuses four wrist bones and removes the scaphoid. The other fuses three or two bones and also removes the triquetrum. The goal is to see which approach gives better grip strength and wrist movement over a year. 170 participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two surgeries.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Partial wrist fusion surgery (with or without triquetral bone removal)
- What this could lead to
- If this trial succeeds, it could help surgeons choose the best wrist fusion technique to improve grip strength and movement for people with wrist arthritis.
- What could go wrong
- This is a surgical technique comparison, not a new drug or cure. Results may not apply to all types of wrist arthritis, and individual outcomes vary.
