Could a common vasodilator unclog microvessels in septic shock?

NCT ID NCT07657741

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether the drug papaverine can improve blood flow in the smallest blood vessels of people with septic shock. Septic shock causes widespread inflammation and poor circulation, which can damage organs. The trial will give papaverine intravenously to 20 adults in the ICU and measure changes in microcirculation using a camera under the tongue. It is an early pilot study designed to gather safety and physiological data, not to prove treatment effectiveness.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

papaverine

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a new way to improve blood flow in tiny vessels during septic shock, potentially reducing organ damage.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early pilot study with only 20 patients and no comparison group. The drug may cause low blood pressure or other side effects, and results may not apply broadly.
