First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests a program called the Transitional Pain Service Program for adults who have chronic pain and take opioids before surgery. The program includes pain education, therapy, and a mobile app to help patients manage pain and safely reduce opioid use. Researchers will compare how many patients successfully stop opioids and how much pain interferes with daily life between those in the program and those receiving usual care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Transitional Pain Service Program (pain education, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and a mobile self-management app)

What this could lead to

If successful, this program could provide a practical way to help patients reduce opioid use after surgery while still managing chronic pain effectively.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-stage study (210 participants) testing a complex behavioral intervention, so results may not apply to all patients or settings. Success depends on patient engagement and adherence.
