Tiny study tracks bacteria as teeth vanish and implants arrive

NCT ID NCT06149585

First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026

Summary

This study looks at how the types of bacteria in the mouth change in people with severe gum disease as they go from having some teeth left to having no teeth, and then after getting dental implants. Researchers will collect microbial samples and analyze DNA to see if different implant materials affect which bacteria grow. The goal is to understand these shifts and use the results to plan larger future studies.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help dentists choose implant materials that promote healthier mouth bacteria and guide future larger studies.

What could go wrong

This is a very small study with only 12 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It is designed to gather information, not to test a treatment.
