Talking therapy may help spine surgery patients cut opioids before going under the knife

NCT ID NCT07221786

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether adding cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to standard education helps people who take opioids for chronic pain taper off them before spine surgery. About 45 adults scheduled for major spine surgery at least four weeks ahead will be split into two groups: one gets education alone, the other gets education plus CBT. The main goal is to see how many in each group successfully reduce their opioid dose by the day of surgery.
