Teen Weight-Loss surgery: a 10-Year showdown
NCT ID NCT00923819
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study follows 120 teenagers aged 13 to 18 with severe obesity to see if weight-loss surgery (gastric bypass) leads to better health than standard treatments like diet and exercise. Participants are tracked for up to 10 years, measuring weight loss, quality of life, and mental health. The goal is to find out if surgery is a safe and effective option for teens.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that weight-loss surgery is a safe and effective option for severely obese teenagers, leading to better long-term health and quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is an observational comparison, not a randomized trial, so results may be influenced by patient choice. Surgery carries risks like infection or nutritional deficiencies, and long-term effects in teens are still being studied.
