NCT ID NCT04210284
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether drinking a protein shake (Ensure Max Protein) for two weeks before and four weeks after joint replacement surgery can improve nutrition levels in patients with osteoarthritis. Researchers will measure blood markers of nutrition at several points. The study involves 72 adults aged 55 to 95 who are scheduled for hip or knee replacement and have signs of poor nutrition.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ensure Max Protein Shake (dietary supplement)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a simple nutritional drink helps patients recover better after joint replacement surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 72 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The supplement may not significantly improve nutrition or recovery.
