Ear cartilage to the rescue? a tiny biopsy could rebuild knees
NCT ID NCT07755579
First seen Aug 10, 2026 · Last updated Aug 11, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial is testing whether a single injection of micrografts made from a patient's own ear cartilage can improve symptoms and knee function in adults with moderate knee osteoarthritis. The micrografts are prepared from a small ear cartilage sample using a special device, without lab culture. Researchers will track changes in knee pain, stiffness, and function over 12 months, and use MRI scans to see if cartilage thickness improves.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Autologous ear cartilage micrografting (Mytocel MSK) using Rigenera Technology
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a minimally invasive, one-time injection to ease knee osteoarthritis pain and potentially improve cartilage condition, delaying or avoiding more invasive surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial, so results may not be conclusive or generalizable. The procedure involves a biopsy and injection, which carry risks like infection or pain, and the micrografts may not effectively regenerate cartilage.
