Could blocking an extra nerve double migraine relief?
NCT ID NCT07763678
First seen Aug 13, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether adding a second nerve block—targeting the greater auricular nerve—to the standard occipital nerve block provides better pain relief for people with chronic migraine. About 80 adults with chronic migraine will receive either the combined block or the standard block alone, both guided by ultrasound. The study measures changes in pain scores to see if the extra block makes a meaningful difference.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Ultrasound-guided nerve blocks: a standard greater occipital nerve block alone or combined with a greater auricular nerve block
- What this could lead to
- If the combined nerve block works better, it could offer a more effective, non-drug option for people with chronic migraine who don't get enough relief from current treatments.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial, and the added benefit of the second nerve block is unproven. Results may not apply to everyone, and there are rare risks like bleeding, infection, or nerve damage.
