Vacuum dressing may speed healing after breast reconstruction in obese women

NCT ID NCT04003038

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) device, which uses a vacuum to help wounds heal, works better than standard bandages for the abdominal incision in obese patients having breast reconstruction surgery. About 80 participants will be randomly assigned to receive either NPWT or a regular dressing. The goal is to see if NPWT reduces wound healing problems like wound separation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

negative pressure wound therapy (a special vacuum dressing)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could reduce wound healing problems after breast reconstruction in obese patients.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The therapy may not improve healing compared to standard bandages.
