Shock vs magnet: which therapy is kinder to memory?

NCT ID NCT05054699

First seen Apr 26, 2026 · Last updated Apr 28, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two treatments for severe depression that hasn't improved with medication: electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and magnetic seizure therapy (MST). Both use controlled seizures to reset brain activity, but MST uses magnets instead of electricity. Researchers will measure how well each treatment lifts depression and how it affects memory. About 100 adults with major depression or bipolar depression will take part.
