Summary

This pilot study tests a smoking cessation approach that combines mindful smoking practice with a smartphone-based sensor-band. Adults who smoke at least five cigarettes a day will be randomly assigned to either receive the mindful smoking intervention plus standard quitting information, or just the information. Over eight weeks, participants in the intervention group will practice mindful smoking when cravings hit, using the RAIN method (Recognize, Accept, Investigate, Note) while the sensor-band tracks heart rate and other body signals. The study measures whether this approach is feasible and acceptable, and looks at early signs of quitting success.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Mindful smoking practice using the RAIN method and a smartphone-based sensor-band
What this could lead to
If this approach works, it could offer a new, non-drug way to help people quit smoking by combining mindfulness with real-time body feedback.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study focused on feasibility, not proof of effectiveness. The intervention may not lead to lasting abstinence, and results may not apply to a larger population.
