Gut bacteria tweak may curb weight regain
NCT ID NCT06681246
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study explores whether changing gut bacteria with antibiotics can help people keep weight off after losing at least 10% of their body weight. 200 adults with a BMI between 28 and 35 will take either antibiotics or a placebo for 10 days. Researchers will track weight, microbiome changes, and blood sugar responses to see if this approach could prevent the common cycle of weight regain.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Antibiotics (Augmentin) or placebo
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new way to prevent weight regain after dieting by targeting gut bacteria.
What could go wrong
This is an early exploratory study, not a treatment trial. Antibiotics can have side effects and may not prevent weight regain. Results may not apply to everyone.
