Simple blood test could spare thousands from unnecessary chemo
NCT ID NCT06076811
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether a blood test for tumor DNA can better predict if colorectal cancer will come back after surgery. Currently, doctors use tumor tissue to decide who needs chemotherapy, but many patients get chemo they may not need. The test checks for cancer DNA in the blood, which could be a more accurate way to find hidden cancer cells. Researchers will follow 1,600 patients to see if the test works in real-world practice.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
liquid biopsy (circulating tumor DNA test)
What this could lead to
If successful, this blood test could become a standard way to identify which colorectal cancer patients need chemotherapy after surgery, sparing others from unnecessary side effects.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The test may not prove more accurate than current methods, and results may not change practice immediately.
