Could a tiny valve boost survival after cardiac arrest?
NCT ID NCT06939335
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether adding a small valve (PEEP) to the breathing bag during CPR helps restart the heart and improve survival in adults whose heart stops outside a hospital. About 132 participants will be randomly assigned to receive CPR with or without PEEP. The goal is to see if this simple change leads to better outcomes, including survival with good brain function.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Positive End-Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) via a disposable valve set at 5 cm H2O
What this could lead to
If it works, this could improve survival and brain function after cardiac arrest by keeping airways open during CPR.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial (132 participants), so results may not apply broadly. PEEP may also increase chest pressure or cause lung injury.
