Heart surgery upgrade: tiny opening may stop Post-Op failure

NCT ID NCT06547788

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether creating a small opening between the upper heart chambers during mitral valve repair can prevent heart failure symptoms after surgery. Researchers will compare 50 patients who get the extra opening to those who have standard surgery alone. The goal is to see if this added step is feasible and helps lower pressure in the heart.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Mitral valve repair with creation of an 8 mm inter-atrial shunt

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a way to prevent heart failure symptoms after mitral valve surgery by relieving pressure in the heart.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early feasibility study with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The added procedure also carries surgical risks.
