Knee replacement pain study aims to cut chronic pain risk

NCT ID NCT03998813

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two ways to manage pain after total knee replacement: a continuous nerve block using a catheter near the femoral triangle versus tissue infiltration with a local anesthetic. The goal is to see which method better prevents long-term chronic pain and improves knee function. About 287 adults scheduled for knee replacement will take part.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point to a better way to manage pain after knee replacement, reducing the chance of long-term chronic pain and improving recovery.

What could go wrong

This is a single-center study, and results may not apply to all patients. The two techniques may show little difference, or one may have unexpected side effects.
