New combo treatment aims to ease knee pain without surgery
NCT ID NCT05286775
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This completed trial tested whether adding medical treatments (lidocaine injections and shockwave therapy) to a knee education program could better reduce pain and improve function in people with knee osteoarthritis. 71 participants with moderate to severe knee pain were randomly assigned to either the education program alone or the education program plus the medical treatments. The study measured changes in knee function and pain at the end of treatment and three months later.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
lidocaine and shockwave therapy
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could offer a non-surgical option to reduce pain and improve knee function in people with knee osteoarthritis.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 71 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatments are short-term and may not provide lasting relief.
