Could cutting off blood flow for minutes relieve arthritis pain?
NCT ID NCT07003113
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a technique called ischemic preconditioning, where blood flow to one thigh is briefly and repeatedly restricted using a device. Over two weeks, 24 adults with knee osteoarthritis and low back pain will receive either the full treatment or a sham (low pressure) version. Researchers will measure changes in walking speed, muscle strength, and pain to see if this simple approach can improve function.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Ischemic preconditioning (device-based blood flow restriction)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to improve walking and reduce pain for people with knee osteoarthritis and low back pain.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small early study with only 24 participants, so results may not apply widely. The procedure involves temporary blood flow restriction, which carries a small risk of blood clots or discomfort.
