Blocking knee blood vessels may offer new pain relief for severe osteoarthritis
NCT ID NCT07763158
First seen Aug 13, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether genicular artery embolization (GAE), a procedure that blocks certain blood vessels in the knee, can reduce persistent pain in people with severe knee osteoarthritis who haven't found relief from conservative treatments and may not be candidates for surgery. Participants are randomly assigned to either GAE or continued conservative care, and their pain and function are measured before treatment and at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months after. The goal is to see if GAE can provide a meaningful reduction in pain and improvement in knee function.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- genicular artery embolization, a procedure that blocks certain blood vessels in the knee to reduce pain
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a new pain-relief option for people with severe knee osteoarthritis who can't undergo surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial, and the procedure may not relieve pain for everyone. Risks include complications from the embolization itself, such as bleeding or tissue damage.
