Veterans test One-Day-a-Week fasting to beat weight regain

NCT ID NCT04131647

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether intermittent fasting (eating only two small meals one day per week) can help overweight veterans maintain weight loss after a 12-week diet and exercise program. Researchers will compare this approach to a standard heart-healthy maintenance plan in 175 veterans aged 50-75. The goal is to find a practical way to prevent the weight regain that often happens after successful weight loss.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

intermittent fasting (one day per week, two small meals)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way for veterans to keep weight off after losing it, potentially reducing obesity-related health problems.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 175 participants, and the results may not apply to everyone. Intermittent fasting can be hard to stick with and may cause hunger or low energy.
