Weekly insulin shot could replace daily injections for diabetes

NCT ID NCT07658417

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at how well a new once-weekly insulin, called insulin icodec, works for people with type 2 diabetes who are switching from a daily insulin. Researchers will track blood sugar control, treatment satisfaction, and how well patients stick to the new regimen over about 30 weeks. The study involves 216 adults in China and aims to see if the weekly shot is a practical and effective option in real-world settings.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

insulin icodec (a once-weekly insulin injection)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a once-weekly insulin is as effective as daily insulin for managing type 2 diabetes, potentially simplifying treatment and improving quality of life.

What could go wrong

This is an early real-world study with only 216 participants and no comparison group, so results may not apply broadly. There is also a risk of hypoglycemia or other side effects with any insulin.
