Can a heart drug tame blood sugar and weight in diabetes?

NCT ID NCT06423729

First seen Aug 12, 2026 · Last updated Aug 13, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests whether adding nicorandil, a drug typically used for heart conditions, can improve blood sugar control and reduce body weight in obese people with type 2 diabetes who are already taking sulfonylureas. About 46 adults with a BMI over 30 will receive nicorandil 10 mg twice daily for 3 months. Researchers will measure changes in HbA1c, body weight, BMI, and markers of inflammation and blood vessel health.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Nicorandil 10 mg oral tablets taken twice daily for 3 months
What this could lead to
If effective, nicorandil could become an add-on treatment to improve blood sugar control and support weight management in obese people with type 2 diabetes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial, so results may not apply broadly. Nicorandil can cause side effects like headaches and low blood pressure, and its benefits are not yet proven.
