Knee replacement showdown: surgery vs. intensive medical care
NCT ID NCT06643845
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two approaches for people with knee osteoarthritis who are already scheduled for knee replacement surgery. One group will have the surgery as planned, while the other will receive a comprehensive medical care plan including medications, injections, and lifestyle changes. The goal is to see if the medical approach can control pain and function as well as surgery, potentially allowing many to avoid or delay the operation. The trial will enroll 1000 participants across multiple centers.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Multimodal medical and non-medical treatments (medications, injections, physical therapy, lifestyle changes)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a way for many people with knee osteoarthritis to avoid or delay major surgery through a comprehensive medical care plan.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage study with no phase, and the medical approach may not work as well as surgery for some patients. There is also a risk that delaying surgery could lead to worsening symptoms.
