New diabetes drug imeglimin takes on metformin in mitochondrial showdown
NCT ID NCT07436182
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study compares two diabetes medications—imeglimin and metformin—in 176 adults newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Participants will take one of the two drugs for 12 weeks. The main goal is to see which drug better improves mitochondrial function, measured by a blood test called the pyruvate/lactate ratio. Researchers will also check blood sugar control and safety.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Imeglimin and metformin
- What this could lead to
- If imeglimin works better than metformin at improving mitochondrial function, it could offer a new first-line treatment option for type 2 diabetes.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial (176 people) that hasn't started yet. It measures a biomarker (pyruvate/lactate ratio) rather than long-term outcomes, so success here may not translate to better diabetes control or fewer complications.
