Smart home tech could spot early dementia signs
NCT ID NCT06704971
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This Stanford study is testing whether non-intrusive sensors placed in the home can automatically track neuropsychiatric symptoms like mood changes and agitation in older adults. Researchers will enroll 25 participants with or at risk of mild cognitive impairment or dementia, along with healthy controls. The goal is to create a dashboard for doctors that summarizes symptom patterns, making it easier to diagnose and manage mental health conditions.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
non-intrusive ambient intelligence technologies (in-home video and audio sensors)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a system that helps doctors monitor mental health symptoms at home, potentially catching early signs of dementia or cognitive decline.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 25 participants. The technology may not work as expected in real-world homes, and privacy concerns could limit adoption.
