Can a nasal cannula beat a mask for chest trauma breathing support?

NCT ID NCT05828030

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study compares two breathing support methods for people with chest trauma who have low oxygen levels. One group gets a high flow nasal cannula, the other a standard oxygen mask. The goal is to see if the nasal cannula reduces the need for a breathing tube or pneumonia. About 100 participants will be enrolled.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

high flow nasal cannula

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a more comfortable and effective way to support breathing in chest trauma patients, potentially reducing the need for a breathing tube.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 100 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The intervention is a procedure, not a drug, so benefits may be modest.
