Scientists dig into gut bugs to unlock constipation mystery
NCT ID NCT06801184
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at the gut bacteria of 40 people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) who have constipation and produce high methane. Researchers will collect stool and blood samples to see which bacteria are present and how they change with standard treatment. The goal is to better understand the role of methane-producing microbes in IBS, which could lead to more targeted therapies in the future.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward better diagnostic tools or treatments for constipation-predominant IBS with methane overgrowth.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early observational study with only 40 participants. It does not test a new treatment, so direct benefits are unlikely.
