Could ozempic stop pancreatitis from coming back?
NCT ID NCT07617155
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) can prevent repeat episodes of acute pancreatitis caused by very high triglycerides. About 396 adults who recently had such an attack will receive either semaglutide injections or a placebo for 18 months, alongside standard care. Researchers will track how many have another pancreatitis episode and whether their triglyceride levels improve.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new way to prevent repeat episodes of severe pancreatitis in people with very high triglycerides.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 4 trial that hasn't started yet. The drug may not reduce pancreatitis risk, and side effects like nausea or rare gallbladder issues are possible.
