New registry aims to see if blocking knee arteries eases arthritis pain

NCT ID NCT06781463

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is creating a registry to track how well a procedure called genicular artery embolization (GAE) works for knee osteoarthritis pain over time. Up to 100 adults with mild to moderate knee arthritis that hasn't improved with standard treatments will be enrolled. The goal is to measure pain changes and any side effects, comparing GAE to a sham procedure at 12 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If successful, this registry could provide evidence that genicular artery embolization is a safe and effective option for knee osteoarthritis pain, potentially offering an alternative to surgery.
What could go wrong
This is an observational registry, not a controlled trial, so results may be less definitive. The procedure carries risks like bleeding or infection, and the study is small (100 patients), so findings may not apply to everyone.
