No-Scalpel weight loss: new stomach burn procedure tested
NCT ID NCT05574777
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a new, non-surgical weight loss technique called Gastric Mucosal Ablation (GMA) in 13 people with class III obesity. The procedure uses a device to carefully burn the stomach lining, aiming to mimic the hormonal effects of weight-loss surgery. The main goal was to check if the procedure is safe and feasible, with participants followed for 6 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Hybrid argon plasma coagulation (HybridAPC) device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a less invasive weight-loss option for people with severe obesity, avoiding the need for surgery.
What could go wrong
This was a very small, early feasibility study with only 13 participants. It focused on safety, not weight-loss effectiveness, so much more research is needed.
