Gastric bypass showdown: which surgery cures diabetes best?
NCT ID NCT03821636
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two versions of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery to see which one is better at putting type 2 diabetes into remission in severely obese patients. The trial will enroll 396 people with a BMI of 35 or higher and type 2 diabetes. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either a long alimentary limb or a long biliary limb bypass, and researchers will measure diabetes remission rates along with weight loss and complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (two variants: long alimentary limb or long biliary limb)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a specific type of gastric bypass surgery is more effective at putting type 2 diabetes into remission for severely obese patients.
What could go wrong
This is a surgical trial with inherent risks like infection or bowel obstruction. The results may not apply to all patients, and diabetes remission may not be permanent.
