Can cooking classes and group visits help people lose weight? a pilot study
NCT ID NCT06797453
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tested whether shared medical visits (group doctor appointments) plus cooking classes help people manage their weight. 43 adults with obesity from a weight management center were randomly assigned to either group visits with cooking classes or online modules about a high-fiber diet. The study measured how acceptable and appropriate participants found these programs, and also tracked fruit and vegetable intake and nutrition security. Results will show if this 'food is medicine' approach is worth testing in a larger trial.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
shared medical visits and cooking classes (behavioral intervention)
What this could lead to
If this approach is acceptable to patients, it could lead to a larger study testing whether group visits with cooking classes help with weight loss.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 43 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It measures only acceptability and diet changes, not actual weight loss.
