Could a new drug combo prevent liver failure after tylenol overdose?
NCT ID NCT05517668
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tested whether adding fomepizole to the standard treatment (N-acetylcysteine) could better protect the liver in people who took too much acetaminophen (Tylenol). The trial included 29 adults and children aged 10 and older who were at high risk for liver injury. The goal was to see if the combination reduced liver damage more than standard care alone.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Fomepizole (4-MP) given intravenously alongside standard N-acetylcysteine
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a better treatment for acetaminophen overdose that reduces liver damage and shortens hospital stays.
What could go wrong
This was a small, early-phase trial that was terminated, so results are limited. The added benefit of fomepizole over standard care alone is uncertain and needs more study.
