NCT ID NCT05228964
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether low-intensity focused ultrasound, aimed at the amygdala (a brain area linked to emotions), could reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. Twenty-nine adults received daily 10-minute sessions for three weeks. Researchers measured changes in mood and brain activity using questionnaires and MRI scans.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
low-intensity focused ultrasound
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a non-invasive, drug-free way to improve mood and anxiety symptoms by calming a key brain region.
What could go wrong
This was a small, early-stage trial with no placebo group, so results may be due to expectation or natural recovery. Long-term safety and effectiveness are not yet known.
