Can a kidney drug stop acute injury from becoming chronic?
NCT ID NCT07775482
First seen Aug 20, 2026 · Last updated Aug 21, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether finerenone, a drug already used for chronic kidney disease, is safe and tolerable for people hospitalized with acute kidney injury (AKI). About 72 adults with moderate-to-severe AKI will receive either finerenone or a placebo once daily for up to 45 days, alongside standard care. The study aims to see if the drug can help prevent AKI from progressing to chronic kidney disease, while monitoring for side effects like high potassium and blood pressure changes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- finerenone (Kerendia), an oral capsule taken once daily for up to 45 days
- What this could lead to
- If this works, finerenone could become a way to help people recover from acute kidney injury and reduce their risk of developing chronic kidney disease later.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study focused on feasibility, not proof of benefit. The drug may not improve outcomes, and it carries risks like high potassium levels and low blood pressure.
